The GAO is reporting that 13 of the 18 benchmarks that constitute “progress” or “success” in Iraq haven’t been met. Worse yet, Iraq has only completed the easy benchmarks: get to work without being blown to pieces, get home without being blown to pieces…

Q: Do you think the U.S., or U.N. forces, should have moved into Baghdad?
A: No.
Q: Why not?
A: Because if we’d gone to Baghdad we would have been all alone. There wouldn’t have been anybody else with us. There would have been a U.S. occupation of Iraq. None of the Arab forces that were willing to […]

Iraq’s Lost and Found

Remember the billions of dollars shipped to Iraq — mostly in huge, shrink-wrapped stacks of $100 bills? Former American civilian administrator in Iraq, L. Paul Bremer, defended the gross incompetence and loss of nearly $12 billion in cash shipped to Iraq by saying that the United States had to bring tons of dollars into […]

Patience as a Vice

The Bush administration asks you for your patience. It sounds reasonable. Patience is good, right? It’s positive. 3,848 Americans have died. $500 Billion taxpayer dollars have gone up in smoke and rubble. But there’s no plan for Iraq. No timetable. Just a plea for patience.

Martha Raddatz had a story on ABC News alleging discovery of a U.S. plan to keep troops in Iraq not just until 2009, but, “one long-term plan would have 30,000 to 50,000 U.S. forces in Iraq for five to 10 years beyond 2009.” That’s 2019.

Democrats Give Up

Congressional Democratic leaders have dropped the timeline for U.S. troop withdrawal from the Iraq war-spending bill, instead including a bunch of toothless benchmarks that the Baghdad government must meet to continue to receive U.S. reconstruction aid — unless Bush waives those requirements, which he will.
What’s the plan, guys? Are you effectively giving up […]
