Remember that line from the movie Independence Day? Plausible deniability?

Lieutenant Walter Haut was the public relations officer at Roswell in 1947 responsible for press releases surrounding the crash of an alien space ship. Haut’s press releases attributed the UFO siting to a weather balloon. Project Mogul was a top secret project using high-altitude balloons to carry sensor equipment into the upper atmosphere, listening for evidence of Soviet nuclear tests.

Haut died on December 15, 2005, leaving a sworn affidavit to be opened only after his death. That affidavit was just made public. In it, Haut recants the “weather balloon story” as a cover-up!

He described seeing not just the craft, but two alien bodies, partially covered by a tarpaulin. They appeared to be about 1.2m tall, with disproportionately large heads.

He also recounts a high-level meeting he attended with base commander Col William Blanchard and the Commander of the Eighth Army Air Force, General Roger Ramey at which pieces of the alien craft were handed around for everyone to inspect, though none were able to identify its material.

He describes a metallic egg-shaped object 12-15ft in length and around 6ft wide stored in ‘Building 84′ - one of the hangars at Roswell. The craft had no windows, wings, tail, nor landing gear.

Haut’s affidavit concludes: “I am convinced that what I personally observed was some kind of craft and its crew from outer space“.
